Discovery of 2,100-Year-Old Roman Shipwreck Off Sicily

A Roman shipwreck dating back over 2,000 years was discovered off the Sicilian coast, containing approximately 500 ancient wine jars known as amphorae. The discovery was made by divers from Italy's Carabinieri cultural heritage protection squad, who acted on a tip from local fishers. This remarkable find is believed to date back to between the second and first centuries B.C.

The shipwreck was located about three miles off the coast of Mazara del Vallo, at a depth of approximately 46 meters (151 feet). Alongside the amphorae, divers also found two lead anchor stocks, further indicating the ship's purpose in ancient trade.
