Saudi Arabia uncovers over 1700 artifacts at Miqat al-Juhfah archaeological site

The Heritage Commission of Saudi Arabia, in partnership with the University of Exeter, has completed its first season of archaeological surveys at the Miqat al-Juhfah site, revealing over 1,700 artifacts. These findings include pottery, glass, stone fragments, and tombstones dating back to the Umayyad and Abbasid periods. The excavation also uncovered six pottery kilns and a water channel that were utilized by pilgrims, highlighting the site's historical significance as a pilgrimage station along the ancient Hajj route.

This significant discovery is part of ongoing efforts to document and preserve historical pilgrimage routes. The artifacts found at Miqat al-Juhfah originated from various regions, including the Levant, Egypt, and Abyssinia, indicating the site's role in facilitating both pilgrimage and trade during the early Islamic period.

Located 187 kilometers northwest of Makkah, the Miqat al-Juhfah site has been historically significant since the second century AH.
