Sir Patrick Stewart Dies at 86 After Battle with Alzheimer's and Lewy Body Dementia
What happened
Sir Patrick Stewart passed away on October 28, 2026, at age 86 at his Los Angeles home following a battle with Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementia.
The Context
- Seven decades of craft: Stewart began with the Royal Shakespeare Company in the 1960s before redefining modern genre storytelling as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in 1987 and Professor Charles Xavier in 2000.
- Active slate until the end: Despite an undisclosed health battle, Stewart continued studio work, including reprising his role as Professor X for *Avengers: Doomsday*, scheduled for December 2026.
- Research advocacy push: Stewart’s family directed memorial support toward the Johns Hopkins Alzheimer's Disease Research Center Fund and the Alzheimer's Foundation of America to accelerate degenerative cognitive research.
