Saudi Arabia and Greece Reaffirm Defense and Security Cooperation Amid Regional Energy Threats
What happened
Saudi Arabia and Greece issued a joint statement to accelerate bilateral defense, cybersecurity, and counter-terrorism coordination following talks in Riyadh between Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
The Context
* Persistent air defense: Greece confirmed the continued deployment of its Patriot missile battery stationed in Yanbu since 2021 to safeguard critical Red Sea energy hubs. * Beyond military hardware: Bilateral talks expanded into industrial supply chains, advanced manufacturing, network defense, and pharmaceutical logistics. * Institutional backing: The partnership builds directly on bilateral defense minister sessions and the Supreme Council for Strategic Cooperation established in 2025.
The Number
— the share of Saudi Arabia's oil transported across the East-West pipeline terminating near Yanbu, where Greek air defense assets shield critical export infrastructure from disruptions.
Takeaway
Expect sustained military deployments and expanding Mediterranean-Gulf security pacts as regional leaders insulate core logistics hubs against supply network shocks.
