Manchester United Executives Review Michael Carrick's Head Coach Position Following Bournemouth Defeat
What happened
Manchester United executives Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox convened at the Carrington training ground on October 26, 2026, to deliberate the managerial future of head coach Michael Carrick following a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth.
The Context
* A steep operational slide: Carrick took charge in January 2026 and delivered a third-place finish, but United has now slipped to 16th place in the Premier League—just one point clear of the relegation zone. * Executive deliberation at Carrington: Chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Jason Wilcox spent hours reviewing Carrick's status while the coach observed an under-21 fixture, leaving around 5:00 p.m. without an official public decision announced. * Succession planning underway: The Ineos-led hierarchy has evaluated potential alternative options, with Newcastle manager Eddie Howe under consideration alongside Julian Nagelsmann and Antonio Conte.
The Number
— The number of wins Manchester United has secured across their first 12 fixtures of the 2026–27 campaign, marking a rapid collapse in form that triggered immediate board-level scrutiny under Ineos ownership.
Takeaway
Expect executive leadership to either finalize a replacement framework with top candidates like Eddie Howe or deliver a formal statement clarifying the operational hierarchy within days.
