Buccaneers Rout Panthers 43-13 as Baker Mayfield Returns from Thumb Injury
What happened
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers routed the Carolina Panthers 43-13 on October 25, 2026, pairing Baker Mayfield’s return with 258 rushing yards and four forced turnovers.
The Context
- Mayfield returned with limited throwing duties: Following a three-game absence for a dislocated right thumb, Mayfield wore a protective glove and completed 7 of 11 passes for 64 yards and one touchdown.
- The ground game took control: Tampa Bay exploited Carolina's league-worst rushing defense, handing the ball off 49 times while Bucky Irving generated 106 yards and two touchdowns.
- Defensive execution widened the gap early: A muffed punt recovery and a 32-yard strip-sack fumble return by Calijah Kancey built an early 17-0 lead, eventually pushing the score to 33-6 before halftime.
The Number
— The total rushing yards logged by Tampa Bay on 49 carries, showing how teams can insulate injured assets by dominating fundamental operational phases.
Takeaway
With Tampa Bay improving to 2-5 and Carolina dropping to 3-3, the Buccaneers will look to see if Mayfield's thumb stabilizes enough to expand the playbook down the stretch.
