Trump Says Putin-Zelensky Meeting to Be Arranged Very Soon as US Pushes Ukraine Peace Diplomacy
What happened
On October 28, 2026, US President Donald Trump stated that a direct meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky would be scheduled "very soon."
The Context
- Diplomatic momentum builds: The bilateral proposal follows Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s disclosure of November trilateral talks involving Kyiv, Washington, and Moscow.
- The Gulf diplomatic corridor: Kremlin officials pointed to the United Arab Emirates, specifically Abu Dhabi, as a designated venue for preliminary three-way talks.
- Preparatory hurdles remain: While Russian officials offered an invitation for talks in Moscow under security guarantees, Kremlin spokespeople cautioned that any formal leaders' summit demands extended preparation, leaving dates unconfirmed.
The Number
The conflict is now in its fifth year since February 2022, creating compounding logistical, commodities, and macroeconomic exposure across European and international markets.
Takeaway
Watch for whether official delegations confirm preparatory sessions in Abu Dhabi this November, which will signal whether leader-level talks move from public rhetoric to an active negotiating table.
