UAE launches Naseej initiative to promote circular economy in textile sector

The UAE has officially launched the 'Naseej' initiative, aimed at transforming the textile sector into a circular economy model. Directed by President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the initiative seeks to reduce textile waste and promote sustainable practices within the industry. This launch is a response to the growing challenge of textile waste, which is estimated at 220,000 tonnes annually in the UAE.

Naseej is a collaborative effort that involves multiple stakeholders, including government bodies and private sector partners. The initiative will kick off with its first community activation event scheduled for June 5 to 7, 2026, at Yas Mall in Abu Dhabi. This event will serve as a platform to engage the public and raise awareness about sustainable textile practices.

The 'Naseej' initiative is formed through a partnership between the National Projects Office, Ministry of Economy and Tourism, Emirates Foundation, and Tadweer Group. It is built on five strategic pillars: Collection and Recycling, Awareness and Outreach, Behavioural Research, Policies and Regulations, and Circular Business and Innovation. The groundwork for this initiative began during COP28, focusing on creating a structured national approach to textile waste management.

This initiative is significant as it addresses a pressing environmental issue while aligning with the UAE's broader sustainability goals. By fostering collaboration among various stakeholders, Naseej aims to embed circular economy principles within the textile sector. The timing of this launch is crucial, as it coincides with a global shift towards sustainability and responsible consumption.
