Apple iPhone Duo Inner Display Cracks Traced to Hinge Stress Point in iFixit Teardown
What happened
Early buyers of the $1,999 Apple iPhone Duo reported cracked inner displays, with an iFixit teardown tracing the failure to a central support bar in the hinge mechanism that exerts mechanical stress on the flexible panel.
The Context
* Early hardware volatility: Reports surfaced across community forums within days of release, detailing screen fractures and crunching noises during the device's first few openings. * Mechanical root causes: CT scans and 3D modeling revealed that a central hinge bar may fail to retract completely, concentrating localized pressure directly against the folding OLED screen. * Apple's active response: Apple acknowledged the defect in a subset of units, directing impacted customers to AppleCare for free device swaps while avoiding a full product recall.
The Number
— The provisional repairability score assigned by iFixit, marking the highest rating recorded for a foldable smartphone due to modular battery access, despite the steep $999 out-of-warranty inner display replacement cost.
Takeaway
Expect Apple to quietly adjust factory hinge tolerances in upcoming production batches while processing rapid AppleCare swaps to protect enterprise adoption of its premium form factor.
