Apple Launches Eighth-Generation iPad mini With First OLED Display and A20 Pro Chip
What happened
Apple unveiled the eighth-generation iPad mini featuring an 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED screen, an A20 Pro processor, and display-integrated acoustic speakers starting at $699.
The Context
* Hardware overhaul: The device moves from an 8.3-inch LCD to an 8.5-inch OLED panel hitting 1,200 nits peak HDR brightness, framed by 24% thinner bezels and a 5.4 mm profile weighing 255 grams. * Architecture upgrade: Under the hood, a binned A20 Pro chip drives operations alongside Wi-Fi 7 connectivity, IP67 dust and water resistance, and an Acoustic Display system that emits sound directly through the glass. * Pricing reposition: Starting at $699 for the 128 GB baseline model, the $200 price bump over the previous generation moves the mini out of entry territory and into direct alignment with mid-tier pro hardware.
The Number
— The new baseline investment, reflecting a $200 price increase that repositions the compact line from an accessible media slate into an executive-tier field device.
Takeaway
Pre-orders open October 28 across 36 countries, with retail shipments landing November 6 to establish a higher performance baseline for compact computing.
