Jordan Launches Airstrikes on Alleged Militant Sites in Southern Syria Following Karak Church Attack
What happened
On October 26, 2026, the Royal Jordanian Air Force launched airstrikes against militant targets in southern Syria's Daraa province following an attack in Karak governorate.
The Context
* Retaliatory action: Jordan initiated Operation "Jordanian Deterrence – Hamoud" after an attack on October 23–24 left 9 dead and approximately 40 injured, leading to the arrest of 3 suspects linked to groups in Syria. * Conflicting accounts: Amman stated the operation neutralized militant outposts in coordination with Damascus, while Syrian officials denied prior coordination and initiated an inquiry into reported local casualties. * Heightened borders: Syria moved to tighten border security measures alongside reported crossing closures, while Jordan entered a 3-day national mourning period.
The Number
— The documented civilian fatalities from the initial October 23–24 attack that prompted immediate cross-border military escalation and prompted operational reviews across regional trade routes.
Takeaway
Expect tighter Levant border logistics, increased surveillance checkpoints, and short-term transit delays as regional security forces heighten activity along the Jordan-Syria frontier.
