Canelo Alvarez Regains WBC Super Middleweight Title with Unanimous Decision Over Christian Mbilli in Riyadh
What happened
Saul "Canelo" Alvarez defeated the previously unbeaten Christian Mbilli by unanimous decision in Riyadh to recapture the WBC super middleweight belt.
The Context
* A 13-month operational reset paid dividends, marking Alvarez's return from left elbow surgery and his September 2025 loss to Terence Crawford. * Control of tempo neutralised pressure, as Alvarez countered Mbilli's early forward momentum with body work and landed key uppercuts through round seven. * Capital discipline decided the rounds, reinforced when Mbilli suffered an eighth-round point deduction for rabbit punches, allowing Alvarez to close out his 64th professional win.
The Number
— The widest margin on the judges' scorecards (alongside 116-111 and 115-112), illustrating how strategic efficiency outscored raw volume across 12 full championship rounds.
Takeaway
Expect Alvarez to pause immediate matchmaking discussions for personal downtime before targeting high-yield defense dates in late 2027.
