Pentagon Releases Full-Resolution Image Confirming China's X-37B-Like Reusable Spaceplane in Orbit
What happened
The US Defense Intelligence Agency released a full-resolution 2024 commercial satellite image showing China’s reusable experimental spaceplane in low-Earth orbit, confirming hardware mirroring the American X-37B.
The Context
- Hardware parity is operational: The commercial image reveals delta wings, payload bay doors, and solar arrays engineered for autonomous runway landings and multi-mission reuse.
- Dynamic orbital maneuvers are proven: China's vehicle has executed multiple sub-satellite releases and recaptures during flights with durations stretching up to nine months.
- The flight tempo is accelerating: Four missions have launched since 2020, with the latest active flight operating continuously in low-Earth orbit since February 2026.
The Number
The total number of reusable spaceplane flights China has executed since 2020, demonstrating operational maturity alongside the US Space Force's two active X-37B airframes.
Takeaway
Expect global aerospace corridors to face tighter tracking protocols and contested orbital real estate as reusable maneuver vehicles become standard infrastructure.
