China Operates Fourth Reusable Spaceplane Mission as Pentagon Releases Orbital Imagery Amid US-China Space Competition
What happened
On October 29, 2026, the Pentagon released a full-resolution commercial satellite image capturing China's uncrewed reusable spaceplane operating in low Earth orbit.
The Context
- Mirroring the X-37B: The orbital vehicle closely mirrors the design and dual-use profile of the US Space Force's X-37B platform, operating covertly under the CSSHQ designation.
- Demonstrated orbital grappling: Between June and September 2026, ground tracking recorded the vehicle conducting catch-and-release maneuvers with sub-satellites, proving proximity-capture capabilities.
- Commercial imaging power: A commercial Vantor satellite captured the orbital intersection, signaling that commercial space domain awareness now rivals state-run surveillance assets.
The Number
— the total number of orbital missions China has completed with this platform since 2020, with prior flights logging missions lasting up to nine months.
Takeaway
Expect future defense and logistics assessments to factor in active proximity operations as low Earth orbit becomes a regular arena for dual-use testing.
