Apple iPhone Duo Inner Display Cracking Reports Prompt Limited Replacement Program Amid Launch Scrutiny
What happened
Early buyers of the $1,999 iPhone Duo reported inner display cracks along the hinge within hours of unboxing, prompting Apple to offer direct replacements.
The Context
* First-generation foldable hardware: Released October 23, 2026, the device pairs a 7.6-inch folding display with a complex hinge exceeding 100 internal mechanical components. * Mechanical friction identified: Teardowns by iFixit point to internal hinge support bars failing to retract cleanly, creating pressure hotspots beneath the flexible screen. * Testing contradicts broad failure: Stress tests logged over 80,000 folds without structural breakdown, indicating the defect stems from early manufacturing tolerances rather than standard wear.
The Number
confirmed user failures occurred out of hundreds of thousands of initial shipments, isolating the disruption to early production batches.
Takeaway
Expect Apple to quietly adjust assembly tolerances while existing stock constraints stretch repair and replacement windows into next quarter.
